The University of Missouri Botanic Garden Presents: Courses in Winter Gardening

In Darwin’s Footprints - The Galapagos Islands: In 2000 Dick Munson led a group of adventurers to the islands made famous by Charles Darwin and the voyage of the Beagle. It was here that Darwin first observed island biogeography and began to formulate his startling theory of evolution. This illustrated lecture will examine the beauty of the islands and their wonderful creatures. It will also take you to the heart of the Ecuadorian rain forest that followed the Galapagos portion of the trip. Two more different places would be hard to find, but they both show the wonderful, yet fragile, world of nature. 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11. Class meets at the Landscape Services Classroom, Virginia Avenue Parking Garage. Members, $8; non-members, $10.

Bulbs - are they just for spring?: When choosing bulbs, most gardeners think only of tulips, crocus, and daffodils. Join Landscape Gardener Ken Redding and examine the diversity of familiar and unusual bulbs and bulb-like plants for summer interest. From hardy lilies to tender cannas, caladiums, dahlias, gladiolus, and fall blooming colchicums and more, there are bulbs that bloom from May through October. Ken will discuss new cultivars and touch upon techniques of starting, planting, and growing. 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26. Class meets at the Landscape Services Classroom, Virginia Avenue Parking Garage. Members, $8; non-members, $10.

Field Trip to The Butterfly House in Chesterfield, Mo.: Join Assistant Director Charles Paxton on this leisurely field trip to The Butterfly House in Chesterfield. This is a great opportunity to observe many species of colorful tropical butterflies in a setting reminiscent of their native habitats. If you need something to get you out of your winter doldrums, this is it! Nothing like a trip to the tropics to get you “steamed” up for the upcoming gardening season. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, March 8. Transportation and admission is included in the class fee. Lunch will be on your own. Meet at Landscape Services offices at the Virginia Avenue Parking Garage. $18 members, $20 non-members.
